October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
So, we’re rallying our entire grooming community to donate their expertise at local animal shelters throughout the month
After the recession in 2008, animal shelters were overrun with pets who’s owners could no longer afford to take care of them. In response, Wag’n Tails created a contest for our customers called Mobile Grooming for a Cause, which was held during the month of October to promote Adopt a Shelter Dog Month. This contest challenged Wag’n Tails customers to groom as many shelter dogs as possible during the month of October, because every pet deserves to find their forever home, and a fresh groom can make that dream a reality. The winner of the contest received a luxury trip with hotel and airfare paid in full by Wag’n Tails.
Unfortunately, the same thing is happening again because of inflation, economy and people adopting pets during the pandemic without realizing the commitment that pet ownership requires. That’s why Wag’n Tails has decided to once again rally our customers to help these shelter dogs look better to find new homes. Our Wag’n Tails customers are some of the best groomers in the world – You Can make a difference in helping these shelter dogs get adopted.
Why should you participate? Besides the heartwarming satisfaction of giving shelter animals a chance at a loving home, we’ve also got some fantastic prizes lined up for the top three people who groom the most dogs during the month.
To be eligible to win the prizes, participating mobile groomers will need to register and track their volunteer grooms. We’ll verify that all winners have groomed the number of dogs claimed with the shelters they have worked with.

The Details
According to the ASPCA and the American Humane Association, animal shelters in our country take in more than 6 million pets each year. The really heartbreaking statistic however, is that millions of those pets are euthanized every year because they aren’t adopted by a loving family!
When we last ran Mobile Grooming for a Cause, our customers groomed more than 2,000 pets! With your help, we can make an even bigger difference this year.
It’s not that we’re asking you to take the month off to groom shelter pets. If you can schedule one day a week, or one day during the entire month of October or just one appointment slot when you have it available to groom on of these shelter pets, you will have made a difference. With more than 5,000 Wag’n Tails owners on the road, we can make a massive dent – even if each customer only grooms a single dog.
This event will coincide with National Adopt a Dog Month this October with the goal of providing shelter dogs with a free groom to make them so adorable they’ll get adopted into a warm and loving home where they belong. A professional groom by a skilled pet stylist like yourself will do much, much more to get one of these pets adopted than a quick bath by a volunteer. You and your high level of expertise are the keys to getting them a home!
In previous years, many of the participants reported adoptions on a bunch of the pets after they were groomed. The vast majority of the shelter pets they did were basic bath and brush grooms, so they didn’t have to spend a lot of time sprucing them up. Please look at your schedule and get on board with us in this awesome event!
How to participate
It’s easy; just fill out the form below and at the end of the month we’ll email you a link where you will enter the number of grooms you donated. The contest will be on the honor system but we will verify the winner’s grooms (first, second, and third place – we will contact the individuals with the most grooms for the shelter name, phone number and a contact person at each shelter where grooms were donated).
You must register no later than Friday, October 29th, 2023, to be eligible for the prizes.
We also want to say that we know how busy each and every one of you are so if you can only groom just one shelter dog, it will make a difference. If you have an empty slot in your schedule one day or if you have a cancellation or a little bit of spare time please try to groom a shelter dog. All we ask is that you do what you can to help.

The first-place winner will receive a luxury trip for two to the destination of their choice valued at $10,000.
Second place winner will receive a $1000 credit from our friends at Groomers Choice.

Although we encourage all groomers to donate grooms during the month of October (and every month), to be eligible for any of the prizes offered, you must be registered to win.

We suggest feeling out how the groom goes, if the dog needs a blow dry and can handle it then go for it but if the dog is skittish then we suggest doing a towel dry as best as you can. From our experience we found some of these dogs can be scared of the dryer, so we try not to put any more stress on them.
We prefer dogs to be the priority animal groomed since we are working alongside ASPCA for Adopt a shelter dog month. If no dogs are available, then other shelter animals can count.
Yes, we will call the shelters worked at for the winners and confirm they are a Wag’n Tail customer.
Bath, ear cleaning, nail clipping and cut if you are working with a dog that has a coat.
